I’ve been the proud owner of a capsule wardrobe for about six months now and it’s definitely teaching me some things about myself and my style evolution. Here’s what I’ve learnt over the past few months…
I have a safety-net within my wardrobe. Aka, ‘I like stripes’. There’s a constant theme within my 35-45 piece wardrobe, and that’s striped t-shirts (of varying lengths and colors), black leggings and jeans. I’ll mix it up a little – at the moment, I’ve got about 4 pairs of floral printed shorts in there for summer – but stripes and leggings or jeans are my go to.
I actually know how to dress for my shape. This is something that I’ve struggled with a fair bit since a) hitting puberty and b) losing weight over the past 18 months. I have this odd shape – if we’re comparing me to the classic ‘apple’, ‘pear’, ‘column’, ‘hourglass’, etc., I’m probably most akin to an hourglass. I have fairly broad shoulders with a small waist and then big hips. However, I have absolutely no chest to speak of, so not your typical hourglass. My legs are long, in fact I’m just a long (well, tall) person. Put all of this together and buying clothes is my idea of hell. Dresses that sit just above the knee on most models fall about 2 inches past my backside. 32inch leg jeans are ankle grazers on me. But I’m getting there. I’m choosing clothes that work with my figure, that aren’t necessarily the latest fashions, but instead items that I can keep in my wardrobe for a long time. True capsule pieces, if you will.
I can be careful when I need to be. This capsule wardrobe thing has actually proved to be extremely useful for my bank balance. Instead of constantly going out and buying new clothes, I try to reuse what I have in my wardrobe or storage. It’s also showing me what I really don’t wear – clothes that I haven’t worn since before I started this wardrobe journey are bagged up and ready to go to charity shops, to friends and to family.
